Welcome back to Thank God It’s Monday! tl;dr Spring is coming! What kind of emotions does that provoke for you? Are you waiting on that seasonal motivation to make changes? Or are you setting the stage so that when the motivation strikes, you’ve already got momentum on your side? I don’t know about all of you, but my fellow Northeastern residents have endured quite the winter. Prolonged sub-zero temperatures, record-setting snowfall, and what feels like a pronounced absence of sunshine for the last three months have worn on everyone. But we did it! With the start of daylight savings this past weekend, it feels like we have officially survived another winter. Driving home tonight around 7 pm and seeing the last of the sun peaking over the horizon is a beacon of hope. I was fortunate enough to walk around the park early this afternoon while I made some phone calls, and every year it’s surprising how many people surface from the woodwork when it breaks 60 degrees. Kids on their bikes, elderly sitting on the park benches, and everyone in between, taking in the first of many warm days to come.
Something shifts when there’s this change in season. Everyone’s resolutions, which have been collecting dust, are taken down off the shelves, revitalized with purpose. People want to move more, socialize more, experience more… The winter hibernation is officially coming to an end, and everyone makes big plans to get the most out of life. What is that urge you get when you feel those first warm rays of the sun? When that seasonal depression takes its leave, what are you most excited to do with the seemingly endless possibilities? We’ll start with the tale as old as time: the realization when everyone tries on their summer clothes for the first time in months, and New Year’s nutrition and exercise resolutions come surging back. Instead of waiting for the panic to set in when you first try on that bathing suit for the season, what can you do now to put yourself in a better position? If you’ve been around TGIM for any amount of time, I hope you realize we don’t believe in extreme measures around here. No crash diets, crazy exercise programs, or nonsense miracle supplements to solve our problems. Set yourself up for success by taking small, sustainable steps. Now that the sun is up later, could you incorporate a 10-minute walk after dinner time? Or maybe utilize that extra sunlight to go get a resistance training workout in? If you need the extra accountability, now is the time to hire a coach to help you reach a goal. Don’t wait until June 1st and then walk into a gym to tell a trainer you want six-pack abs by July. Time is on your side. Use that feeling of rejuvenation that comes with spring to set the stage for a great summer. And maybe your goals are not aesthetic. Maybe you want to travel more this summer or work on a side hustle. Instead of waiting for summer to come knocking on the door, use this time to position yourself for the best outcome. Take the small steps to increase your odds of getting lucky. Do the work now so you can enjoy every moment of the beautiful weather we’ve been waiting so long for. Spring is doing its best to let winter know it’s time to go. Are you doing your best to be ready to make the most out of the season once it’s here? If you found some value in this, please share it with a friend you think would enjoy it! And let me know if you’d like to be added to get TGIM. This week, my podcast recommendation is from Mark Manson’s Solved, “Focus.” With that, if you’re interested to learn more about daylight savings, here’s a podcast episode I recommended in the past that busted a lot of myths and revealed a lot of truths I never knew: from Science Vs., “Daylight Saving Time: Should We End It?” Until next time, Shannon
